"Southern Cross" Documentary Now Complete
The Southern Cross: The Story of the Confederacy’s First Battleflag, has been completed. The fifty-six minute production chronicles the history of the design and creation of a flag that became the prototype for all of the St. Andrews Cross battle flags carried by Confederate armed forces. The hand-stitched silk flag with gold painted stars was borne by the Fifth Company of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans through the Battles of Shiloh and Perryville.
The soundtrack was delivered in 5.1 surround, an option many filmmakers desire to make their program stand out. The battle scenes in Southern Cross afforded many opportunities for cannon shells to fly overhead, bullets to wiz by, and soldiers to charge through the battlefield.

Walla, Ripple, Plop! May 2013 Newsletter

I was recently explaining to our intern about how we used to synchronize sound and film together when I realized how many industry terms are borrowed from other tasks or re-hashed from another era. Most make sense, like "copy," "paste," and "edit." But with others you have to make an association. For instance, when you edit film, and I'm talking honest-to-goodness cellulose, you might cut out a bit of a scene to use later. You would hang each piece of film, or "clip," with an actual clip over a rolling cloth bin (like a laundry bin).

Location Sound - April 2013 Newsletter

We've been doing a lot of location audio in the last couple of months. Most of you already know that using a dedicated location audio engineer for video shoots is the best way to get quality audio. That's because it's not easy. We often say getting good location sound is like herding cats, or is an "impossible dream." We're often faced with impossible odds at getting good sound. So house lights down, single spot on stage center. It's not Shakespeare, it's definitely not Arthur Miller. It's not even as good as listening to Charlie Brown's teacher reading the phone book aloud, but enjoy.

Two Years - January 2013 Newsletter

The ball at Times Square has dropped again, the old man is gone, and the new year's baby is here. It reminds me that two years ago, in January of 2011, we were putting the final touches on our new baby. The walls were up, the spackle and paint were being brushed on, the lights were being wired, and the floors were being installed.

Music is My Life - December 2012 Newsletter

Most recording engineers come to the industry by way of music. That's certainly true of us here at Dynamix. I started taking piano lessons at age 7, and continued music lessons on guitar and trombone through college. My fascination with recording gear started about that same early age with a cassette recorder.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Opens in Theaters

Read a review by Roger Moore of McClatchy-Tribune News Service here.
ADR (automated dialog replacement) is often used to re-record dialog that is missing, faulty, or rewritten. While watching video of the scene, the actor performs the new line with the same timing and inflection as the original dialog. Sometimes ADR is used to change a performance.
Since the original sound was recorded on a movie set, careful attention is given in microphone selection and placement to match the original sound. The recording studio must be dry and reflection-free so the new dialog can be seamlessly inserted into the track.
Using an ISDN connection (studio-to-studio digital patch), our studio in Lexington was able to directly synchronize sound and picture with Fox's Los Angeles studio. Both actor (in Lexington) and director (in LA) were seeing and hearing the same scenes and dialog.
Produced by 21st Century Fox, Directed by David Bowers, starring Rachael Harris, Steve Zahn, Devon Bostick, Peyton List Peyton List , and Zachary Gordon.

Dynamix To Move Into New Studios

We're still in the process of building our studios, so we'll let you know when we officially move. We will have 2 control rooms and 2 VO booths, allowing more spur-of-the-moment recording sessions to better serve you. Our VO booths will be true "room-within-a-room" construction, with floating floors and walls. In addition, soundproof viewing glass, studio interconnectivity, lounge/kitchen, and a large garage (for future recording use) are welcome additions.

We want to thank all you, our clients, for your continued business and for making our expansion possible. We want to also assure you that we are continuing to service you through our construction period and transition. We will let you know in advance if there will be any days we will be closed due to the transition.

Coach Cal Records His New Book at Dynamix
“Bounce Back,” written by John Calipari and David Scott, gives guidance to individuals that suffer setbacks in business and life. The book chronicles Coach Calipari’s own very public setbacks, like his firing as the New Jersey Nets coach, or the Memphis Tiger’s loss in the final minutes of the 2008 NCAA Basketball Championship game. Calipari offers insights on how he “bounced back.”
Coach Cal, as he is affectionately known by basketball fans, is the hottest news in college basketball right now. Having signed a multi-year contract with the UK Wildcats, he is the highest-paid college basketball coach up to this time. He’s had a similar distinction before. When he was hired as the New Jersey Nets head basketball coach in 1996, he was the highest-paid NBA coach up to that time.

Two Documentaries Win Telly Awards
“Retreat from Gettysburg,” a documentary about General Lee’s retreat after defeat, won a Silver in the Film/Video division.
“Bourbon and Kentucky: A History Distilled” won a Bronze, also in the Film/Video division.According to a press release from Witnessing History, “Out of more than 13,000 nominations, Retreat From Gettysburg was selected by industry professionals as being in the top ten percent of all DVD/Film productions in the nation. The Bronze Telly Award presented to Bourbon and Kentucky signified it being in the top fifteen percent of DVD/Film productions in the nation.”
All three of Witnessing History’s DVDs (also including “Long Road Back to Kentucky” have won Telly Awards.
Both documentaries have been broadcast on Kentucky Educational Television (KET).
Writer, host, and Civil War historian Kent Masterson Brown takes viewers onto the battlefield and into Lee’s mind in “Gettysburg.” In “Bourbon,” Brown explores historic distilleries, explains the distilling process, and reveals why bourbon is called “bourbon” and not whiskey. Both documentaries were photographed and edited by Post Time Productions in Lexington, KY. Neil Kesterson of Dynamix Productions was sound designer.

Dynamix Productions Provides ADR for Warner Brothers
ADR is usually needed when there are problems with the sound recorded at the time of filming. Problems include low dialog, extraneous sounds, or even small changes in the script. A variety of microphones can be used for this process, but super-directional mics called shotguns (or booms) are most commonly used to more closely match the original recording. An actor's performance can also be changed or enhanced from that which was originally filmed.
The comedy Strange Wilderness is about the host of a wilderness-themed TV show that goes in search of Bigfoot to save the program from low ratings. This Adam Sandler-produced film is scheduled to be released in theaters later this year by Twentieth Century Fox.
Neil Kesterson of Dynamix Productions has also recently supplied ADR for the films Hide and Seek and Beauty Shop. Dynamix Productions provides recording services for advertising, corporate communications, films, videos, web sites, podcasts, and musicians. Dynamix Productions has been in business since 2003, and is located at 332 North Ashland Avenue in Lexington, KY. To find out more, visit the web site at www.dxaudio.com, or call 859-335-1011.

Twenty One Productions Begins Podcasts
The uninhibited form of podcasting allows more freedom to explore a subject more deeply and provide real conversation that draws listeners in. What's usually missing is professional sounding production. Because Dynamix Productions and Twenty One Productions are already strategic partners, it was only natural to team up and deliver a podcast that was not only engaging, but sounded great, too. Neil Kesterson of Dynamix has engineered soundtracks for several Twenty One short films.

Podcasting and the Central Kentucky business community come together
Tom Martin, editor-in-chief, and Chuck Creasy, publisher, wanted to bring more in depth coverage of feature articles to readers. Feature articles often include interviews with some of the area's most facinating people who are blazing new and exciting paths in business. Podcasts, or "BizCasts" as Business Lexington calls them, include the full interviews that go beyond what can be included in the written article. Listeners can hear firsthand the nuances of conversation between Tom Martin and his subject.
